Ahead of the Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth’s visit to Skye this week, Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston has called on her to visit local schools in desperate need of improvement work.

Former Shadow Education Minister, Mr Halcro Johnston said:

"There are a number of schools across the Highland Council area in need of urgent renovation work or replacement.

“Too many young people are still being taught in school buildings that risk being detrimental to their learning journey and, in some cases, to their health and wellbeing.

“Jenny Gilruth, as a former teacher, must recognise that this is unacceptable and, as well as putting additional pressure on hard-working parents and dedicated teaching staff, is also of real concern to parents.

“I’ve seen for myself the situation at Dunvegan Primary School and raised local concerns in Parliament with the Scottish Government.

“Perhaps the Education Secretary would be better served visiting some of the schools that need improvement if she wants a more honest picture of the problems with the wider Highland Council school estate”.
