[Scottish Parliament, 19.11.2024] Highlands and Islands MSP and Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Jamie Halcro Johnston, will tomorrow join with other Orkney stakeholders meeting with Scottish Agriculture Minister Jim Fairlie (Wednesday, 20th November) to address the long-standing issue of Orkney’s need for a local abattoir.

Mr Halcro Johnston said:

“It’s been over six years since the closure of Orkney’s only abattoir, a significant loss to local farmers and producers.

“There has been a huge effort for many years by the local community to campaign for a new facility, recognising that local abattoirs are crucial for supporting rural businesses, ensuring better animal welfare and reducing food miles.

“I look forward to this meeting and hope it will serve as a crucial step towards a much-needed new abattoir for Orkney; one which will be able to serve the needs of the local community for years to come”.
