[Scottish Parliament, 20.11.2024] Following today’s meeting between Agriculture Minister Jim Fairlie and local MSPs and stakeholders in Orkney about a potential new abattoir in Kirkwall, Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston, who chaired the meeting, said:

“No one in Orkney needs convincing of the merits of a new abattoir, but it is important that other organisations, such as the Scottish Government and their agencies, are supportive of the scheme going forward.

“There is clearly great support for a new abattoir in the islands and this meeting allowed those who have put a huge amount of effort into taking the project forward to show both their passion and the progress that’s been made.

“I was grateful to the Minister for taking the time to listen to local plans and for engaging positively on the details and how any new facility can be delivered, but also be able to operate sustainably for the long term.

“As the project moves forward, I look forward to continuing to support it in any way I can”.
