The Scottish Conservatives have launched a newspaper recovery plan to support the long term future of the industry.
The recovery plan will support local journalism and local newspapers through additional funding streams, support national media with additional Scottish Government advertising spend, rates relief and a journalism foundation.
Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston said: “Our local newspapers have played a vital role during the Covid-19 crisis, providing local people with information relevant to them which they know they can trust.
“And, here in the Highlands and Islands, where our concerns are often far removed from those of the Central Belt which tends to dominate the national Scottish media, the need to support our local media providers is all the more apparent.
“I very much hope that our plan, which has been drafted in collaboration with the National Union of Journalists, will help to assist in securing the future of our local titles.”
